Northwest Texas Healthcare System receives the 2012 Community Service Award

Northwest Texas Healthcare System, a long-time leader in healthcare for the Amarillo community. Northwest has been providing exceptional health care since 1924. In 1996, NWTHS became a for-profit hospital under its owner, Universal Health Services.

As one of the top employers in the Amarillo community, NWTHS is a tax paying entity providing $3.9 million in tax dollars which support education for Amarillo schools, Amarillo College and much more. The commitment continues to our community by providing health care to those most in need. In 2011, UHS and NWTHS have committed more than $130 million in charity care, government sponsored indigent healthcare and other community benefits.

Northwest supports our community by contributing to various non-profits including American Heart Association, March of Dimes, The Bridge, Family Support Services, Make-A-Wish, Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition, Amarillo Senior Citizens, Komen’s Race for the Cure, Eveline Rivers, and United Way, of which NWTHS was named the 2011 “Excellence Above and Beyond” just to name a few. Not only have we monetarily contributed but NWTHS supports employees to volunteer for many of these organizations.

As a business we have leadership in the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and the Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, supporting their community efforts as well.

The 1,800 NWTHS employees are even more committed to the community, they have set up an additional fund raising effort to contribute to non-profits including Go Red, March of Dimes Walk, JDRF Walk, High Plains Food Bank, Race for the Cure, Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild, and more.

As a teaching facility, our employees host numerous students including Texas Tech, Amarillo College, West Texas A&M University, and other higher education students. They encourage and seek local and area high school students to job shadow our staff so they can have a personal experience in their possible health care career choice. Another key program to the hospital is its Junior Volunteer Program which encourages kids 14 years of age and older to assist hospital departments with helpful tasks and exposes them to the inner workings of a hospital.

The list of who and what Northwest Texas Healthcare System exemplifies is ongoing but one common factor is the dedication each of its employees has to providing exceptional health care to our community.
